Iceland - sketch 1 by davepuls Iceland - sketch 1 by davepuls
I am working on sketches towards a finished Oil Pastel painting of ice flows in Iceland. I haven't been there, but they are based on photos taken by a family member.

First sketch - 11x7in Reeves and Sennelier OPs on sketchbook paper. I like the water, but think the ice needs more work, and the composition needs changing to include less mid-ground ice, more sky, and maybe a bit more water.

Please do let me know what you think, as I need some advice!

Hello !I've been to Iceland and I do remember the colours being exactly like that. I love your texture of the water, it's really beautiful, but I agree with you and I think that the ice does not work so well. It looks a bit coarse (respectfully saying so) compared to your wonderful waters. But I understand it's a sketch so I suppose all this is bound to change!

Thanks so much for commenting! Have you seen my second sketch, where I worked on the main ice block? As you've actually been there I'd appreciate your views. There was a surprising amount of dark green in the photos, but the ice was a kind of translucent light blue.

My preference with oil pastels is usually more impressionist, so I still need to decide how realist or impressionist to make it...

Oh! I didn't see there was another sketch. Ok, I'll go seet it and comment. And yes, I do remember the dark green and the strange contrast with the incredible translucent blue of the ice (a painter's or photographer's dream, that blue)...
