Description
A highly experimental new semi-abstract painting, similar to my impasto acrylics, but using oil pastels as encaustic paints!
This is a 6x4 inch painting on cardboard, using cheap oil pastels (Royal and Langnickel Essentials), but melted using a metal spatula as a painting knife. The spatula was heated over a candle and then pressed against the pastels to melt them, or pressed and dragged across the surface.
I wanted to see if it was possible to do a "knife painting" with oil pastels. It is hard work, but I think is probably worth trying again...
Let me know what you think - especially if anyone has any experience of encaustic painting or melting oil pastels!

Gorgeous. I think encaustic painting w/oil pastels is a brilliant idea. it really seems to preserve the integrity and vibrancy of color when they are melted rather than pressed in and blended. The texture is also fantastic.
